What is SilverShield?
SilverShield® is a range of silver-based antibacterial technologies from Microban that have been utilised by manufacturers for over 40 years. In addition to efficacy against bacteria, specific formulations have been shown to reduce viral loading on surfaces. Common applications include mattresses, insulation, kitchen sponges and automotive seating.
How does SilverShield work?
SilverShield disrupts the metabolism of bacteria by preventing the conversion of nutrients into energy, which inhibits bacteria survival, reproduction and colonisation. The additive is inert until it encounters an environment where bacteria can proliferate. Only then will it release tiny quantities of antimicrobial silver ions to inhibit bacterial growth by up to 99.99%.
Key benefits of SilverShield
- Broad spectrum: effective against a wide range of bacteria - including Salmonella enterica, E. coli, MRSA and VRE – by up to 99.99%
- Added level of protection: complements and helps to extend the effectiveness of regular cleaning routines
- Durable: remains effective even if a treated object is nicked or scratched and will not be affected by harsh cleaning chemicals
- Non-leaching: will not leach out of the treated product or surface
- Multi-modal: utilises multiple modes of action, making it hard for bacteria to become resistant to its effects
- Safe to use: has a long history of safe and effective use in multiple product applications
Is SilverShield regulatory compliant?
SilverShield is notified with the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) and registered with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Specific formulations are also permitted for use in food contact applications by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
