Expandable Polystyrene (EPS), due to its lightweight, thermal insulation, and soundproofing properties, is widely utilized in various sectors including packaging, construction, and agriculture. However, the non-biodegradability and recycling challenges of EPS foam make it an environmental burden. The primary methods for recycling EPS foam involve physical and chemical recycling. Physical recycling includes processes such as washing, crushing, melting, and remolding to transform waste EPS foam into recycled pellets for new foam products or modified plastic items (such as picture frames), essentially a form of downcycling. Chemical recycling, through methods like pyrolysis and alcoholysis, breaks down EPS into monomers or fuel oils, achieving deeper resource circulation, though not necessarily environmentally friendly or carbon-reducing, and with high regeneration costs.Meanwhile, the recycling and reuse of discarded textiles are gaining increasing attention globally. This concern not only addresses environmental protection but is also a critical component of the circular economy model. As environmental awareness grows and technology advances, more companies are exploring pathways for recycling old textiles. Targeting two major materials challenging for disposal—EPS foam and PET fibers—Professor Wu Chifei's team of East China University of Science and Technology has, for the first time, proposed using PET fibers as reinforcement for EPS foam. Through integrated innovations in textile, plastic, rubber, and composite processing technologies, this approach achieves enhanced physical upcycling of PET fiber-reinforced EPS composites. Throughout the production process, there is no generation of solid waste, hazardous waste, or formaldehyde. The performance of the fiber-plastic composite materials exceeds that of wood-plastics and pure plastics. The concept and development of fiber-plastic composites offer a new option for the recycling of polymers.This innovative method represents a significant step forward in the sustainable management of polymers and waste materials, potentially reducing the environmental impact while promoting a circular economy. By integrating different materials and manufacturing techniques, Professor Wu's team is contributing to a more holistic approach to recycling, one that could be replicated across various industries facing similar material disposal issues. The success of this method could lead to a reduction in waste, lower carbon emissions, and a more sustainable future for both the plastics and textile industries.

The packaging structure of household appliances is dominated by "EPS foam+corrugated box", in which EPS foam has the characteristics of poor multiple buffering resistance, easy to break and produce foam particles, and poor user experience.As a new type of material, EPP has high toughness, and multiple impacts have less impact on its cushioning effect, which can better protect the product from external damage. However, its price is higher than the traditional EPS cushioning foam, which limits its large-scale alternative use in the packaging of household appliances. Gree team innovatively designed EPS&EPP combination packaging combining the characteristics of low cost of EPS and good resistance to multiple impacts of EPP, which was applied to a certain type of electric heating oil stoves and range hood. Based on CAE simulation technology, its combination structure and foam density were optimized, which reduced the packaging volume and packaging cost while improving the protection performance.
